The FMCSA’s ELD mandate settled the question of whether trucks generate data; now the platforms (Samsara, Motive, Geotab) generate cameras, sensors, and APIs on top of hours-of-service compliance. The IT considerations that follow:
- Driver onboarding and offboarding must include the telematics platform, or you accumulate ghost accounts with live GPS access to your fleet
- Dashcam and telematics data needs a retention decision made by leadership, not by default settings, because that footage is discoverable after an incident
- The integration between telematics and the TMS is worth doing well; done poorly it becomes two systems that disagree about where your trucks are
Freight fraud is now a technology problem
Cargo theft has gone digital: fictitious pickups arranged with stolen carrier identities, compromised email accounts used to redirect payments or reroute loads, and fake carrier onboarding packets built from a hijacked MC number. The defenses are the same identity controls other industries need, applied with trucking’s specific urgency:
- Multifactor authentication on email, the TMS, and load boards, because a compromised dispatcher account is a load thief’s best tool
- Verification procedures for any change to payment details or pickup instructions, confirmed at a known phone number
- Monitoring for the account-takeover patterns (new inbox rules, logins from nowhere) that precede the fraud

Terminals, yards, and the road
Trucking IT lives in more places than an office: terminal networks that reach the yard and the shop, driver rooms, warehouse scanners, and drivers who interact with the company mostly through a phone app. The practical standards we build to:
